Maligayang Kaarawan ! Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro (30 November 1863 – 10 May 1897) FYI He was a Filipino nationalist, and revolutionary. He is often called “the great plebeian,” “father of the Philippine Revolution,” and “father of the Katipunan.” He was a founder and later Supremo (“supreme leader”) of the Katipunan movement which sought the independence of the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule and started the Philippine Revolution. He is considered a de facto national hero of the Philippines,and is also considered by some Filipino historians to be the first President, but he is not officially recognized as such. @andresbonifacio

Smartphone users now spend more time on Instagram than Twitter.

In August, some 7.3 million people pulled up Instagram on their phones every day, compared to only 6.9 million who opened Twitter’s mobile platform religiously, according to data released by comScore, a digital market research firm. What’s more, fans of Instagram, which lets users snap, edit and share photos, spent almost 4½ hours using the app in August, compared with just under three hours for serial tweeters, who blast out short messages to “followers.”

Twitter still has more smartphone users, but not as many log in daily. The social media start-up had 29 million unique mobile visitors last month, compared with 22 million who used Instagram. Twitter also has almost 300 million total visitors — including those logging in from desktop computers — while Instagram is only on phones.

Hunting down terrorists? It’s more fun in the Philippines!

The Electronic Arts’ reboot of the Medal of Honor video game franchise features a mission that takes place in Isabela City, Basilan. The players will take up the role of American Tier-1 Operatives sent into the city to rescue government workers taken hostage by terrorist group Abu Sayyaf.

This is not the first time this video game series has portrayed the Philippines. The first Medal of Honor (1999) had José Rizal as a playable character in the game’s head to head mode, which is odd given that the real José Rizal didn’t fight with guns (the game was set in Europe during WWII), and the fifth sequel, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun (2003), which had a mission called “The Fall of the Philippines” set soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

On this day in 2001, two hijacked planes were crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City and another into the Pentagon building in Virginia. The Twin Towers collapsed and part of the Pentagon was damaged. A fourth plane was intended for the US Capitol Building but its passengers took control and crashed the plane into a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks. The attacks were planned and carried out by members of the terrorist group al-Qaeda, and masterminded by Osama bin Laden. The attacks prompted greater focus on national security both in the US and abroad and led to the War on Terror which included the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. In May 2011 bin Laden was finally found and killed by US forces.

Two researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College have deciphered a mouse’s retina’s neural code and coupled this information to a novel prosthetic device to restore sight to blind mice. The researchers say they have also cracked the code for a monkey retina — which is essentially identical to that of a human — and hope to quickly design and test a device that blind humans can use.

The breakthrough, reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), signals a remarkable advance in longstanding efforts to restore vision. Current prosthetics provide blind users with spots and edges of light to help them navigate. This novel device provides the code to restore normal vision. The code is so accurate that it can allow facial features to be discerned and allow animals to track moving images.

22 Years Ago Today: 1990 Luzon Earthquake

This is not my story to tell.I was barely a year old when this tragedy struck. The only story I had (as told by my parents) about a national calamity when I was a baby was a year later, during the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption. Supposedly, I repeatedly told them the lines ‘Tot ako mawnteyn tubot’ (“Takot ako sa Mountain Pinatubo” or “I’m afraid of Mt. Pinatubo”). And based on the age of my usual readers/followers and most of the Filipino Tumblr users, I think only a few could tell his/her story of the 1990 Luzon earthquake.

But I do have an a posteriori experience of the tragedy. During the glorious age of educational shows on Philippine TV, we had this program Bayani. It was a show on ABS-CBN that features the lives of our national heroes during the Spanish, American, and Japanese colonization periods. But during the later years of the program, they also featured contemporary and ordinary heroes such as Macliing Dulag (a tribal chieftain in Cordillera who led a protest during the Marcos regime), Sajid Bulig (a hero of the Bocaue. Bulacan pagoda tragedy of 1993), and Roselle Ambubuyog (the visually-impaired Filipina who became a Summa Cum Laude at the Ateneo De Manila University).

I remember one Bayani episode when they featured the story of the miners of Benguet who became a rescuer at the collapsed Hyatt Terraces Hotel. It was a memorable experience for me since it showed the resilience and heroism of those miners who did that noble and courageous act voluntarily. The story even became more dramatic when they were asked to stop their rescuing mission because they were accused of plundering what was left at the hotel. Their hard work paid off when they managed to pull out a survivor days after being trapped from the rubble.

If there’s one thing I can be proud of, that would be the spirit of bayanihan among us, Filipinos. Though we may be criticized as a nation who only become united during the time of tragedy, that is some trait that can’t be easily removed from us. But do we really have to wait for a tragedy just to knock some wisdom in our heads?

A few days ago, I was browsing a published journal about the frequency of earthquakes in the whole world. It includes an X-ray-esque map that shows what countries experience more earthquakes. And being an archipelago lying at the Pacific Ring of Fire, I wasn’t surprised to see a bright, white line that stretches across the whole country. It is said that this year (or the next years to come) is the time in the earthquake cycle when the big one is expected to strike. But are we prepared? Are the foundations of our buildings intact? Have we inspected the weak spots in our infrastructures? Are the people residing near the fault lines advised to relocate? do we have a concrete, emergency plan just in case the big one strike? As cliche as it may sound, it is better to be prepared than sorry.
